In my last job, I had my farewell email in my drafts folder for about 1 year before hitting the send button.
Each month that passed, I went back and updated the part that said how long I’d stayed at the company. But let me backtrack and share my story.
When tech layoffs hit in late 2022 to early 2023, I said farewell to most of my UX Research team. They were super talented, hardworking folks. That’s when it hit me — relying on one job wasn’t for me anymore.
Even the best people can lose their jobs unexpectedly. So, in February 2023, I started exploring new opportunities. I have two goals as of March 20th, 2024:
My first goal is to use my knowledge, experience, and talent to help people in tech succeed.
What does “success” mean in tech today? A CEO can be removed with short notice, even the most senior product or engineering people can be replaced, invited to leave, deactivated, made redundant or whatever else we call it.
The uncertain, unpredictable, and even scary times we live in the tech scene goes on to show that it’s more important than ever to claim our own narrative. It matters to develop a unique perspective and to gain success in sharing it with others. That’s what can build consistency in our career journey which is the most important product we build, keep us competitive, and position us as the best version of our professional selves.
That’s why I want to tap into my background as a former investigative journalist and a Staff/Manager UX Researcher, and help you with your storytelling in tech.
My second goal is to reach directly to folks I want to empower the most.
Whether you’re an intern or a seasoned practitioner, in-house or a consultant, working in tech, you need to make sense for yourself and for people around you your tech career and your contributions to the field.
I’m excited to reach out to help folks learn to be better storytellers. Help you express yourself more clearly and coherently than before. I want to explore together how to structure your writing for clarity and persuasion. And most importantly, spell out the non-obvious in the topics that matter in tech in ways that only you can do. That requires identifying the angles that set your narrative apart. I want to coach you to do that.
Remember, you don’t have to label yourself as a tech writer or influencer to practice the art and science of storytelling. Learning how to craft better tech stories can help you elevate your writing, presentations, and speaking engagements both within and outside your workplace. And that’s how you can establish your presence in the tech community.
