#17 Avoiding Complex Terminology
Can a 5-year-old understand what you’re writing to your colleagues at work? Are you clear in what you're saying and giving examples whenever relevant?

As we gain expertise in our work, it becomes second nature to use sophisticated language and assume that our readers (or listeners) are on the same page. But that’s hardly true. You might be communicating with people at different levels of seniority. They might belong to a different team with different skills. Or simply, they might be tired, hungry, or overwhelmed.
Reading complex language is hard work. It gets harder to understand the context and figure out what’s required and by whom. That’s why I keep saying: It’s OK if your first draft is complex. But make sure to go back and edit it for simplicity and clarity.
